River City Blues Reviews Gave You What You Wanted
It was a random stroke of luck that led me to pick up this album, but this band has definitely left me with a lasting impression.
I was perusing through the music store when I noticed the album sitting on the new music shelf in the blues section.
I didn’t think much of it at the time until I was reading an email which said they would be playing a gig in Hamilton that very night.
In desperate need of an interview for an assignment, I figured why not try and get an interview with the band about their new album.
I quickly raced off and bought the CD and returned to my little office to have the first listen.
Right from the first track, Big City Mama, you know this is a solid blues album.
The track starts with some opening licks on the guitar before the Harp comes in over a tight rhythm section. Craig Bracken (vocals, harmonica) clearly shows on this album why he is one of the most sought after session musicians in new Zealand with his skills on the harp.
My first thoughts of the band were good after listening to their album, and during the interview before their set they told me how their strength lies in their live music, but I really had no idea how good they were.
They got on stage and blew me away.
I was in awe at sound of the harmonica.
I think the album was fantastic but it doesn’t quite do the band justice, even though they tried to capture that live feeling when recording.
Stand out tracks: Mudcat Boogie, Cool It Down and Sugar Momma.
